In short, what is included in Labuan Bajo car hire is everything needed to keep the car moving — and what sits outside it is everything attached to you as a guest: attraction and national park tickets, your own meals, and driver accommodation if the trip runs overnight into Flores. What is included in Labuan Bajo car hire as standard?
Every quote we issue is built on the same base. When you receive a figure from us, assume the following are already inside it unless the quote says otherwise:
- The vehicle itself — the class you booked, held for your exclusive use for the whole block. No shared seats, no pooling with other guests.
- The chauffeur — an English-speaking local driver for the full duration, including his standby time while you are at a viewpoint, a restaurant or the harbour.
- Fuel for the agreed itinerary — we fill the tank against the route you confirmed. Fuel is not billed back to you at the end of the day.
- The driver’s own meals — the driver is covered from our side. You are never expected to buy his lunch, and no separate driver meal allowance is added to your bill for in-town days.
- Parking and standard local road charges — hotel parking, harbour parking near the Labuan Bajo pier, and the small municipal parking fees you meet along the way.
- Vehicle running costs and the operator’s own vehicle insurance — maintenance, roadworthiness and the policy carried on the car sit with the operator, not with you. This is one practical reason chauffeured hire dominates here while self-drive stays rare.
- Airport or hotel meeting — pickup at Komodo Airport (LBJ) or at your hotel door is part of the day, not a surcharge, provided it falls inside your booked hours.

How long is a standard hire day — 10 hours or 12?
Our standard block is 10 hours, counted from the moment the car reports to your pickup point, not from the moment you actually pull away. A 07:00 hotel pickup therefore closes at 17:00. Most Labuan Bajo itineraries — Batu Cermin, Puncak Waringin, a stop at Bukit Cinta, a sunset run up to Melo and back — sit comfortably inside that window.
A 12-hour block exists for the days that do not: an early pier transfer plus a late dinner, or a Cunca Wulang waterfall trek that swallows the middle of the day. Twelve hours is quoted as its own rate rather than as ten hours plus two, so the effective hourly cost is lower than extending on the spot.
Beyond your booked block, extra time is charged in whole hours at a rate written on your quote. Drivers here start early — a 05:30 harbour run is routine in peak months — so we would rather build a realistic block up front than push overtime onto a driver who has been awake since four.
Adding a stop inside the same zone is normally free. Adding one that pushes you past your booked hours, or into a different zone, is chargeable, and your driver will tell you the number before you commit rather than after.
In-town versus out-of-town: how radius changes the rate
This is the most misunderstood part of what is included in Labuan Bajo car hire, so it is worth being blunt about it. Every day rate is written against a radius.
In-town means Labuan Bajo and its immediate surroundings: the airport, the harbour and marina area, the hotel strip along Jalan Soekarno-Hatta, Waecicu and Pede beach, Batu Cermin, and the nearby hill viewpoints. Fuel inside this zone is fully absorbed into the base rate, and stops can be reshuffled during the day at no extra cost.
Out-of-town starts the moment you head inland or north — Rangko Cave, Cunca Wulang, Mbeliling, Golo Mori, and anything on the Trans-Flores road toward Ruteng, Wae Rebo, Bajawa or Ende. Those routes are mountainous, slow and fuel-hungry: a leg that reads as 120 km on a map can take five hours of switchbacks. We quote a route-specific rate for them rather than bolting on a vague surcharge, because the honest number depends on the road, not the straight-line distance. What is billed separately?
The exclusion list is short and it does not change: anything that is a ticket, a permit, or a meal for you.
Entry tickets, permits and local fees
Attraction entry — the Batu Cermin cave ticket, Cunca Wulang conservation fees, village contributions at Melo or Wae Rebo, and Komodo National Park permits if your day connects to a boat — is paid by guests. We do not mark these up and we do not fold them into the vehicle rate, because they are set locally and revised periodically. Your driver will state the current amount at the gate and can pay on your behalf in cash, settled at cost.
Your own meals, and the boat side of the trip
Restaurant stops, snacks and drinks for your party are yours. Likewise, if the car connects to a Komodo boat day, the boat is a separate product with its own inclusions — the vehicle covers you door-to-pier and pier-to-door.
How does driver accommodation work on multi-day Flores trips?
On any overland itinerary where the car sleeps away from Labuan Bajo — Ruteng, Bajawa, Moni, Ende, or a Wae Rebo overnight — the driver needs a bed. Two models are accepted locally, and your quote will state which one applies:
- Allowance model. A flat per-night driver allowance is added, covering a simple local room and his evening meal. Indicatively this sits around USD 15–25 per night as of 2026, with highland stops such as Ruteng and Bajawa at the lower end and coastal tourist towns at the upper end.
- Hotel-arranged model. Some properties provide a driver or staff room at little or no cost. Where that applies the allowance is reduced or dropped entirely from your quote. We check this before quoting rather than after.
One more thing that surprises first-time overlanders: multi-day routes are priced per vehicle-day including the return leg. A one-way drop in Ende still has to bring the car and driver back over the same mountain road, so a three-day one-way itinerary is normally quoted as four or five vehicle-days. That is not padding — it is the road.
What do indicative USD figures look like?
The bands below are indicative only, as of 2026, for a 10-hour in-town chauffeured day. They move with fuel prices, season, and the exact unit allocated, and they are not a booking price.

Why is every rate quoted with a chauffeur?
Self-drive is genuinely uncommon in Labuan Bajo compared with Bali, and that is a local reality rather than a sales position. The terrain outside town is steep and unlit, fuel stations thin out fast on the Trans-Flores road, and the judgement a driver brings on timing — when to leave for sunset, which pier gate is open, which shortcut is washed out — is worth more than the notional saving. One timing note before you request a quote
The local fleet is small. Between June and September, peak season for Komodo and Flores overland travel, SUVs and HiAce units are frequently committed weeks ahead, and late requests tend to be answered with a substitution rather than a discount. If your dates fall inside that window, lock the vehicle class early — the rate is far easier to hold than the car.
