Bena megalithic village sits about 19 km south of Bajawa, laid out as two long rows of thatched houses flanking a central spine of ancestral stone formations — the paired ngadhu and bhaga clan shrines. It is a living village, not an open-air museum. Visitors are asked to wear a sarong, provided at the gate, and a per-person contribution is collected at the entrance. Nearby Luba and Gurusina follow the same layout and see far fewer visitors; adding both costs perhaps ninety minutes.
Mount Inerie, the near-perfect volcanic cone commonly cited at around 2,245 m, stands directly behind Bena and is the reason the village photographs the way it does. Clear views are most reliable early in the morning; by mid-afternoon cloud usually collars the summit. Coming in from Aimere the highway offers several safe pull-outs facing the cone.
Around Bajawa itself, the Malanage and Soa (Mengeruda) hot springs are the usual afternoon additions — Malanage where a hot stream meets a cold river, Soa a more developed bathing complex north-east of town.
Wologai is often mentioned in the same breath as Bajawa, so it is worth being precise: Wologai is a Lio traditional village near Detusoko in the Ende regency, on the road between Bajawa and Kelimutu — not a Bajawa day trip. It fits naturally if you continue east, which most of our guests do. If Kelimutu is on your list, ask us to quote the Flores overland itinerary rather than a Bajawa-only transfer.

Can I do Labuan Bajo to Bajawa in one day?
Yes. With a 06:00 start you will arrive in the late afternoon. It is a long day of mountain driving and leaves little margin for Bena the same day, so plan Bena for the following morning when Inerie is clearest anyway.
Is the road safe for a normal car?
The Trans-Flores Highway is paved and used daily by buses and trucks. It is narrow and heavily curved rather than rough, so a standard MPV is fine. What matters more is a driver who knows the blind corners and the sections currently under repair.
Can the driver continue past Bajawa to Ende or Maumere?
Yes. Most guests who reach Bajawa carry on to Kelimutu via Wologai and finish at Ende or Maumere airport. We quote that as a single continuous hire, which works out cheaper than booking separate legs and avoids a return-empty charge.
What happens if rain or a landslide closes the road?
