What is included in a Labuan Bajo to Maumere overland hire?
The hire is quoted as one package covering the vehicle, the chauffeur and the fuel for the whole traverse. You are not paying per transfer; you are chartering a car and a driver for the number of days the route takes.

How many days do you need to drive to Maumere?
Driving hours on Flores are long relative to distance because the road climbs, drops and switchbacks almost continuously. A realistic template as of 2026:

Four days is the compressed version and it works, but it leaves little slack. Five or six days is the version we recommend — it lets you add Wae Rebo (a separate trek with a vehicle transfer to Denge), the Riung 17 Islands detour on the north coast, or a rest day in Bajawa’s hot springs. Guests who want to fly out the same afternoon they see Kelimutu should note that the crater is a sunrise activity and Maumere is still a half-day away; we usually advise an overnight in Maumere before an onward flight.
Which vehicle suits the trans-Flores route?
Vehicle choice matters more here than on a short airport run, because you will sit in it for five to six hours a day on winding road.
- Toyota Avanza or Xenia — 2 to 3 passengers with light luggage. The economical option, best for couples travelling with cabin bags only.
- Toyota Innova or Innova Zenix — 3 to 4 passengers. The sweet spot for comfort on this route: better suspension, quieter cabin, real luggage space.
- Toyota Hiace Commuter or Premio — 5 to 9 passengers with full suitcases. The standard for families and small groups doing the full traverse.
- Fortuner or similar high-clearance — for guests adding rougher side roads such as the approach to Denge for Wae Rebo.

How do you book, and how does the handover work?
Booking is quote-based rather than an instant online checkout, because the price depends on days, vehicle class and how far east you finish.
- Message us on WhatsApp or email with your dates, group size, luggage count and whether you want 4, 5 or 6 days.
- We return a written quote with the vehicle class, the day-by-day plan and the total in USD or IDR.
- Confirm with a deposit; the balance is settled with the driver or by transfer before departure.
- Meet the vehicle at your Labuan Bajo hotel, the harbour, or Komodo Airport (LBJ) on day one.
- Finish at Maumere — hotel, harbour or Frans Seda Airport (MOF). We confirm your drop time against your flight the evening before.
If your plans change mid-route — a village festival, a boat you want to catch at Ende, a longer stay in Moni — tell the driver. Days can usually be re-sequenced; adding days is billed at the agreed daily rate.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive Labuan Bajo to Maumere myself?
Technically yes, but we do not offer self-drive on this route. The highway has blind mountain corners, livestock on the road, night fog above 1,000 m and long stretches without fuel or phone signal. A local chauffeur removes all of that risk and costs little more than a self-drive rental once fuel is counted.
Is it better to fly out of Maumere or Ende?
Both work. Frans Seda Airport in Maumere (MOF) generally has the wider schedule and is the natural end point after Kelimutu. H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport in Ende (ENE) suits guests who want to cut roughly a day off the drive. Confirm your flight before we finalise the itinerary, as schedules on both routes change seasonally.
What is the best time of year for the trans-Flores drive?
April to October is the drier window and the most comfortable for mountain driving and for Kelimutu sunrise visibility. The route runs year-round; in the wetter months we build in extra buffer time because landslide clearance can briefly slow sections between Ruteng and Bajawa.
