One-way car hire in Flores is possible on every major route, but it is priced differently from a return trip. Because almost all vehicles on the island are based in Labuan Bajo and hired with a driver, a one way car hire Flores quote includes a repositioning component: after dropping you in Ende, Maumere or Bajawa, the car and chauffeur still have to drive back. Understanding how that component is calculated is the difference between a fair quote and an unpleasant surprise at the end of an overland trip.

How does one way car hire Flores actually work?
You book a vehicle and driver in Labuan Bajo, travel east along the Trans-Flores highway over two to five days, and end your hire at your chosen city. At that point the hire is finished for you, but not for the vehicle. The driver then has to return along the same road — usually one to two full driving days, plus fuel, meals and accommodation.
That return leg is real cost, and no operator absorbs it silently. It appears in your quote either as a separate drop fee or folded into a higher daily rate. Reputable operators will tell you which method they are using. If a quote looks unusually cheap for a one-way finish in Maumere, the return cost has probably been left out and will resurface later.
Two structural facts shape the whole market. First, self-drive rental is rare in Flores; the chauffeur model is the norm, partly because of road conditions and partly because a local driver is the practical safety net on a route with limited signage, fuel stops and mobile coverage. Second, the Labuan Bajo fleet is genuinely finite — during the June to September peak, well-maintained SUVs and HiAce vans are frequently committed weeks ahead. A one-way booking takes a vehicle out of local circulation for longer than a day tour does, which is why availability, not just price, drives the answer you get.
What does a repositioning charge cover?
The honest way to read a one-way quote is to break the return leg into its parts:
- Driving days back to base — the driver’s time is charged, even with no passenger on board.
- Fuel for the empty return — the Trans-Flores route is mountainous and consumption is higher than flat-road estimates suggest.
- Driver accommodation and meals — an overnight stop is standard on the longer returns.
- Lost local availability — the vehicle cannot take Labuan Bajo work while it is repositioning.
Roughly speaking, the further east you finish, the larger this component. The table below shows approximate road distances and driving time on the main eastbound legs, along with the return time the operator has to absorb.

Should you plan flights out of Maumere or Ende?
Yes — if you plan them first and build the road schedule backwards. This is the single most common planning error we see. Travellers book a cheap flight out of Maumere, then discover the drive needs an extra day, and end up compressing Kelimutu or the Bajawa villages into a rushed dawn dash.
Both Ende and Maumere have airports with domestic connections, but as of 2026 the schedules are thin compared with Labuan Bajo, and many routings connect through Kupang or Denpasar rather than flying direct to Bali. Practical guidance:
- Choose an afternoon departure where possible, so a morning delay on the road does not cost you the flight.
- Sleep in the departure city the night before. Never plan to drive in on the morning of a flight from Bajawa or Ende.
- Confirm the flight yourself close to travel. Regional schedules in East Nusa Tenggara change; verify directly with the airline rather than relying on an old itinerary.
- Allow a buffer day if you are connecting to an international departure from Bali.

When is a Flores loop back to Labuan Bajo cheaper?
Often — and this surprises people. If you return to Labuan Bajo instead of dropping east, there is no repositioning charge at all, because the vehicle finishes where it started. You pay for more travel days but no empty return.
A loop tends to win when:
- You want to reach Bajawa or Ende rather than Maumere. The extra driving days back are close to what the drop fee would have cost anyway, and you keep the vehicle the whole time.
- Your outbound and inbound flights both use Labuan Bajo, which usually has the better connections.
- You are travelling in peak season, when securing a vehicle for a defined round trip is easier than committing one to a long one-way repositioning.
- You want to add a Komodo boat day at the end — easy from Labuan Bajo, impossible from Maumere.

How do multi-day rates absorb the drop fee?
The longer the hire, the smaller the drop fee looks as a share of the total. A two-day hire ending in Ende carries a repositioning cost roughly equal to the hire itself. Stretch the same trip to five or six days with proper stops in Ruteng, Bajawa and around Kelimutu, and that fixed return cost is spread across many more billed days — the effective per-day increase becomes modest.
This is why we usually advise against the shortest possible one-way. Rushing Labuan Bajo to Maumere in two days pays the maximum repositioning penalty for the minimum experience, on a winding road that punishes haste. Adding days improves both the value ratio and the trip.

What should you confirm before booking a one-way hire?
- Is the drop fee included or separate? Get it stated explicitly in the written quote.
- Vehicle class for the terrain. An SUV suits mountain sections and small groups; a HiAce suits larger parties with luggage on the main highway.
- Driver overnight arrangements. Clarify whether the driver’s accommodation on route is included.
- Fuel policy and toll-free reality. Flores has no toll roads, but fuel stops are spaced out — confirm who covers fuel.
- Exact drop point and time — airport, hotel or town centre, and how much buffer before your flight.
- Peak-season lead time. Between June and September, book several weeks ahead; the local fleet is limited and one-way commitments are the first to sell out.
