Day 1: Labuan Bajo to Ruteng via the Cancar spiderweb rice fields
The first leg climbs steadily out of the coastal heat into the Manggarai highlands. Day 2: The Wae Rebo drive and trek
This is the hardest logistics day of any Flores overland plan. The road from Ruteng towards Dintor and Denge narrows sharply and includes broken concrete sections, which is precisely why chassis choice matters. From the trailhead at Wae Lomba it is roughly three hours uphill on foot to Wae Rebo — the village of seven conical Mbaru Niang houses set in a bowl of forest. Most travellers sleep one night in the communal house, follow the welcome ceremony, and descend the next morning. If you are not trekking, your driver waits at the base village; that is standard practice and should be agreed in advance.
Day 3–4: Bajawa, Bena and Mount Inerie
The run to Bajawa is long but scenic, tracking the south coast before climbing again. Bajawa is Ngada country, and the megalithic village of Bena — ancestral stone formations, thatched roofs, ikat weaving on the doorstep — sits directly beneath the near-perfect cone of Mount Inerie (2,245 m). A full day here is worth it: add Gurusina, the Malanage hot springs where a scalding stream meets a cold river, and a coffee stop in the Ngada highlands. Rushing Bajawa in a single afternoon is the most common mistake in a compressed Flores 7 day road trip itinerary.
Day 5: The coast road, Blue Stone Beach and on to Moni
Leaving Bajawa you drop back to the sea near Nangapanda, where Blue Stone Beach (Penggajawa) is lined with piles of sorted blue-green pebbles being dried for export. Note the geography honestly: Penggajawa lies west of Ende, so it belongs on the approach day, not after Kelimutu — going back for it later means a two-hour round trip you do not need. Continue through Ende, then climb again to Moni, the base village for the crater lakes.
Day 6: Kelimutu at sunrise
Leave Moni around 04:00. It is a 30–40 minute drive to the park gate and a further 20–30 minute walk to the highest viewpoint. Kelimutu’s three crater lakes sit side by side and change colour independently over months and years as mineral chemistry shifts — nobody can promise you a specific colour on a specific morning, and any operator who does is guessing. Day 7: Moni to Maumere

Which vehicle should you hire for the trans-Flores route?
Chassis is not a detail here. Over seven days you will cover sustained gradients, tight switchbacks, and at least two sections of degraded surface. Two configurations cover almost every booking:
- SUV (Toyota Innova, Innova Zenix, Fortuner, Pajero Sport) — best for two to four passengers with luggage. Higher ground clearance matters on the Denge road and after heavy rain.
- Toyota HiAce (Commuter or Premio) — the sensible choice for five to ten passengers. More cabin room for a seven-day crossing, plus a proper luggage bay. Slightly lower clearance, so route notes for Wae Rebo are agreed in advance.
Standard city hatchbacks are not appropriate for this itinerary and we do not quote them for it.
