Komodo National Park cannot be reached by car. The park is a marine reserve — Komodo, Rinca, Padar and the surrounding islands are separated from the mainland by open water, so every visit starts on a boat from Labuan Bajo. What a car does is cover the land legs: airport to hotel, hotel to harbour before departure, and the run back to town or the airport when your boat returns. That is exactly what we hire out — a vehicle with a driver, timed around your boat.
We say this plainly because a fair number of visitors arrive expecting a road route into the park. There is none, and as of 2026 there is no bridge, ferry-with-vehicle service or road access to the park islands for tourists. Anyone advertising a “drive into Komodo National Park” is describing something that does not exist.
What land legs does a car actually cover?
A Komodo trip is a chain of short movements on land bracketing a long day on the water. The car handles all of the land side:
- Komodo Airport (LBJ) to your hotel — most town hotels are 10–20 minutes from the terminal; properties toward Waecicu, Pede or the northern ridge run longer.
- Hotel to the harbour or marina jetty — the pre-departure run, often before dawn for sunrise Padar itineraries.
- Harbour back to hotel or airport — day boats typically return to town in the late afternoon; liveaboards drop off on their own schedule, which we build the pickup around.
- Filler days on land — a half-day loop around Batu Cermin, Rangko and the hill viewpoints when weather cancels a boat day or you have a spare afternoon.
- Onward overland — for guests continuing east through Flores after the park, the same vehicle and driver can carry on as a multi-day overland package instead of returning to the airport.
Rinca Island (Loh Buaya) and Komodo Island (Loh Liang) are both boat-only as well. Once you land there, movement is on foot with a park ranger — no vehicles are available to visitors inside the park.
Which vehicle suits the harbour run?
Harbour transfers are short, but luggage volume decides the vehicle. Divers and liveaboard guests arrive with far more baggage than the seat count suggests, and a car that fits six people rarely fits six people’s dive bags.

Every hire includes a driver. Self-drive is uncommon in Labuan Bajo and we do not recommend it for boat-day timing: a local driver knows which jetty your operator actually uses and where to stop when the harbour road backs up. The standard arrangement is set out on car hire with driver.
How do you book the car around a boat schedule?
The booking runs on WhatsApp and takes a few messages:
- Send the anchors — arrival flight number and date, hotel name, boat departure time and the jetty your boat operator gave you, number of passengers, and rough luggage count.
- We confirm the timing — we work backwards from your boat and propose a pickup time, allowing for peak-season congestion at the harbour approach roads.
- You receive a written quote — vehicle, hours, inclusions and the price in USD, before anything is committed.
- Driver contact on the day — you get the driver’s name and number the evening before, and he waits at the hotel lobby or the airport arrivals area with a name board.
- Payment — settled on the day with the office in cash or by transfer; we do not ask for card details over chat.

What does it cost? (indicative, USD, 2026)
These are indicative ranges only and are not a fixed tariff. Final pricing depends on vehicle, hours, pickup time, luggage and season — June to September is the tight window in Labuan Bajo and vehicles are genuinely scarce, so early booking matters more than haggling.

Rates cover the vehicle, driver and fuel for local running. They do not cover boat tickets, national park entry and ranger charges, meals or accommodation. Park fees are set and collected by the park authority and are normally arranged through your boat operator — we do not quote them, because those figures change and we will not publish numbers we cannot stand behind. Frequently asked questions
Is there any car available inside Komodo National Park?
No. Once you land at Loh Liang or Loh Buaya, you walk short, medium or long trekking routes accompanied by a park ranger. There is no vehicle service for visitors on the park islands.
How early should the car collect me for a sunrise trip?
Boats aiming for sunrise on Padar commonly leave between 05:00 and 06:00. Most town hotels are 5–15 minutes from the jetties, so we usually propose pickup 30–40 minutes before your boat time — enough margin for the harbour approach without leaving you standing in the dark for an hour.
Can the driver hold our luggage while we are on the boat?
We prefer not to. A parked vehicle is not a secure store, and we will not pretend otherwise. Almost every hotel in Labuan Bajo will keep bags in its luggage room on a checkout day, and that is the arrangement we recommend. If there is genuinely no alternative, tell us in advance and we will discuss options honestly rather than improvise on the morning.
Do I still need a car if my hotel runs a shuttle?
Not always. If your hotel shuttle matches your boat time, use it. Hire a car when the timing does not line up, when you have a late or irregular return, when luggage volume exceeds a shared van, or when you want the vehicle standing by for the rest of the day — see full-day car hire charter.
